News Desk: “Pohela Falgun” – the Bengali spring comes with the flaming beauties of Bengali nature. The flamboyant trees stand straight with pride to shows off its fire appearance. The cuckoos comes out from their nest with their musical voice. And with all these nature’s music, dance and play spread its love like a sweet fragrance. The Bengalis celebrates such glory of nature with artistic festive mood.
Bangla Academy revised the Bangla calendar in this fresh year to match it with the Gregorian calendar. They aimed at observing the significant days in line with the historic background. With that notion Pohela Falgun will now be celebrated on Valentine’s Day, February 14, instead of February 13. It’s like the nature beautified itself with the essence of love – with the glory of the historic Valentine’s Day.
Bangla Academy Research, Compilation, Dictionary and Encyclopedia Department Director Mobarak Hossain said the adjustments in the Bangla calendar have been made in accordance to historical dates of Bangladesh –February 21, 1952, March 26, 1971 and December 16, 1971. The birthday of Kazi Nazrul Islam and Rabindranath Tagore’s birth are also taken into consideration, he added.
The new calendar’s Falgun month will have 30 days instead of 29 when it is a leap year in the Gregorian calendar. Just like the past years the Bangla New Year will start from April 14.
The cabinet meeting on October 25, 2019, approved the new public holiday list of 2020 and the Ministry of Public Administration published the list in the form of a notice on October 30, 2019.
Therefore, today it’s a day of love in the air as the Falgun (Bengali spring) knocking the door!
