Opinion Desk: Quader said this after a meeting with presidents and general secretaries of the party’s associated organizations at the Awami League president’s political office in Dhanmondi in the capital on Friday
Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that the ruling party wants a strong opposition for a strong democracy.
“We want a strong opposition for a strong democracy. But BNP has been suffering from frustration after a humiliating defeat in city polls and are talking nonsense. How will they unite people if they do not have any unity within the party?” he said.
Quader, also the current minister of Road Transport and Bridges, said this after a meeting with presidents and general secretaries of the party’s associated organizations at the Awami League president’s political office in Dhanmondi in the capital on Friday.
The Awami League general secretary said that directives have been provided to associated bodies to form full-fledged committees by February and hold council for expired units by April.
“Associated bodies have been given directives to submit full-fledged committees to the Awami League chief or the office,” he said while adding that another meeting with mayors and lawmakers of Dhaka city will be held today in this regard.
Talking about rebel candidates’ win in the recently held city polls, Quader also said the number of councillors elected as rebel candidates in the city polls is not too high.
“We have some internal problems. That is why the directives have been given to the authorities concerned to hold council in the wards and thanas to form new committees,” he said.
Regarding the second anniversary of BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s imprisonment on graft cases, Quader said that there is no scope for bringing back communal politics as people do not want to see such negative politics.
Awami League leaders Abdur Rahman, BM Mojammel Haque, Mirza Azam, Ashim Kumar Ukil, Abdus Sabur, Sujit Roy Nandi, Biplab Barua, and associated bodies’ presidents and general secretaries were present, among others.
